Surinamese people are the inhabitants of Suriname or people of Surinamese descent. Suriname had formerly been the colony of Dutch Guiana which was founded during the early 17th century.
Surinamese culture is very diverse and dynamic and has strong Asian and African influences.
The population is composed of the contribution of people from the Netherlands, Africa, India, China and Indonesia as well as indigenous peoples who lived in the area before the arrival of European settlers. 90% of persons established in Suriname have ancestors who come from other countries and regions.
Most of the approximate 500,000 inhabitants live in the north of the country, in the districts of Paramaribo, Wanica and Nickerie. The least populated county is Sipaliwini, which covers most of the nation’s interior and is sparsely inhabited.
More than half of the population lives in and around the capital. The city of Paramaribo is the heart of this small country and the sounding of their culture.
